SOAPBOX: Pop-Up Open Mics

As an artist, you are a political being. Your audience is a political body. Your work is political work. Patrick’s Cabaret invites artists to step up to the SOAPBOX Open Mic and claim space for art as a site of political power. Each open mic will include two featured artists presenting politically-oriented work, plus opportunities for 7 people to spend up to 7 minutes each onstage expressing hopes, dreams, fears, and calls to action in this tumultuous political season.

Featured Artists
Oct 11th - Anna Kunin & Keno Evol
Oct 25th - Dylan Fresco & Hector Chavarria (The Big Gay Mexican)

Why an Open Mic?

SOAPBOX pop-up political open mic was created in conversation with Dylan Fresco. This event’s goal is to create a safer environment to explore ideological differences, hold ourselves accountable to the impacts and limits of those ideologies, and empower artists to hone their political forces. Views presented will be those of the artists themselves, Patrick's Cabaret does not endorse, explicitly or otherwise, any particular candidates.

How to Sign Up for the Open Mic

There will be 7 open mic slots of up to 7 minutes each. ALL open mic slots will be selected by random lottery at 7:30 PM. You may either enter their names IN-PERSON starting at 7:00 PM at the event, or sign-up ONLINE ahead of time. You must be present at the beginning of the event to earn a spot, if selected, and we strongly encourage you to support the other performers and stick around for the entire event.

What Can/Should I Present at the Open Mic?

This SOAPBOX is a creative space, above all else. Artists are encouraged to think deeply about their role in politics and present creative work, rather than campaign messaging, that reflects on our political reality in a new way. What story from your past are you thinking about as the campaign season burns brightest? What music explains tension, and what music suggests release? What poetry do we need to hear before stepping into a voting booth?

Keep an eye out for our election night event! As a part of the SOAPBOX series we are inviting artists of all stripes to a casual evening event with the news on in the background. More information coming soon.
